What type of braces for adults?

In adults, requests are often for discreet braces. A majority of the public prefers this type of appliance for the discretion it offers, especially those who work and don’t want to be seen with conventional adult braces.

Invisible aligners, also known as Invisalignis a solution that more and more adults are turning to. It’s a transparent device to be worn 21 hours a day, and removed at mealtimes and when brushing your teeth.

This device can be worn discreetly in public and can only be slightly visible if you get close enough. For an adult, these braces are an ideal daily ally.

There are also other (fixed) braces that are more traditional, but also more visible. Metal (also known as brackets) or ceramic braces are often used to fit children, and offer less discretion. As a result, these braces are also much less expensive.

However, there is a slightly more discreet solution for fixed braces. Braces are attached to the inner surface of the teeth (lingual braces), offering a little more discretion to people wearing fixed braces.

While there are various solutions to consider, the best way to choose braces for an adult in Belgium or Luxembourg is to consult an orthodontist to find the right solution for your needs. Although braces are primarily a cosmetic procedure, they are also an ideal solution for problems associated with malpositioned teeth and jaws.

How much do adult braces cost?

There are several factors that can influence the price of braces in Belgium for adults, such as :

  • Type of device Fully removable adult braces are much more expensive than fixed braces. The latter are more cost-effective, but also less discreet. However, while it’s difficult to estimate the exact cost of braces, here’s a rough estimate:
    • Fixed metal braces 1,000 to 2,500 euros
    • Fixed ceramic or composite braces from 2,000 to 3,500 euros
    • Invisible removable braces From 2,500 to 6,000 euros

Mutual insurers and some insurance companies may also be involved. However, orthodontic treatment for adults is less reimbursed than treatment for children;

  • Treatment complexity Orthodontic treatment costs may be higher if your case is complex enough to take longer to treat;
  • Duration of treatment The duration of treatment may vary from one case to another, and therefore influence prices;
  • The orthodontist The practitioner’s fees may vary. It all depends on whether or not he’s under contract. You can find out by contacting the firm when you make contact or by using the
    INAMI web application

Which braces work best?

Every adult brace is capable of producing positive results, but the most effective braces on the market are fixed braces, which offer very positive and rapid results. Despite the fact that the price of these braces in Belgium for adults is the lowest on the market, they are still the most effective braces available today.

However, wearing removable braces can also offer great results, provided you’re a very rigorous person and wear your mouthpiece 21h/24h.

Once again, it’s your orthodontist who can best advise you on your orthodontic problems.

Which braces are the most comfortable?

For all adult braces, a period of adaptation is necessary at the very beginning.

Adults with fixed braces may experience some irritation in the mouth due to the brackets, and in the case of lingual braces, the tongue may also be somewhat irritated at the very start of treatment.

The Invisalign mouthpiece is certainly the least restrictive.although there is a slight adaptation period when it is fitted.

It is important that wearing your braces is painless.. It may be uncomfortable at first, but it should never cause severe pain. Pressure will be exerted on the teeth, which may be unpleasant at the start of treatment, but it’s important to consult your orthodontist if your braces are really causing you problems.

What are the disadvantages of braces?

Depending on the type of adult braces, there are a few negative points to note. Nevertheless, don’t forget to consider all the positive aspects of having adult braces fitted in Belgium and Luxembourg.

The disadvantages of fixed braces are :

  • Braces maintenance Removable splints: this is a little more time-consuming than a removable splint, because it’s important to check that all the brackets are in good condition and that they’re clean. It’s essential to use a toothbrush adapted to your adult braces, dental floss and dental brushes to remove all food residues and tartar.
  • Regular check-ups Wearing fixed braces requires regular visits to the orthodontist, with check-ups every 5 to 8 weeks.
  • Lack of discretion Metal braces: unobtrusive, unsightly and not very popular with some people, despite their excellent results. Adults with braces prefer discretion.
  • Adapting your diet Some foods can be very unpleasant to eat, and can even cause problems such as damaging your braces. Hard foods should be avoided, as you risk forcing your braces, loosening it and causing dental pain. What should I avoid eating?
    • Foods that are too hard for example, an overcooked baguette.
    • Raw, whole fruit/vegetables Avoid biting directly into a whole fruit or vegetable, preferring to eat these foods cut into small pieces, grated or cooked.
    • Sticky foods Sticky foods: it’s hard to get rid of certain foods on your braces, such as toffees, chewing gum and other sweets.
    • Too many sweet foods Sugar can lead to cavities, and fixed braces require a lot of maintenance. Dental hygiene is a little more complicated with this type of appliance.
    • Fibrous meats and fish Fibrous foods are difficult to remove when maintaining your braces and teeth. Chewing is also more complicated if these foods are quite hard.

If you wear fixed braces with ceramic bands, we strongly advise against eating foods that may stain the bands.These include tea, coffee, soft drinks and foods with many artificial colorings, wine, spinach, salty sauces (ketchup, mustard, soy, etc.) and certain spices such as curry. Smoking is also not recommended.

At the very beginning of wearing your new braces, if your mouth and/or tongue are irritated, also avoid citric and pungent foods. It’s also best to eat very soft foods for the first few days before your fixed braces are fitted.

The disadvantages of removable braces are :

  • Pick-up at mealtimes When eating and drinking hot and/or sugary beverages, it’s important to remove your braces. This can be a nuisance when out and about. It is also important to put the device back on after meals, in order to wear it for at least 21 hours a day;
  • Temporary lisp Barely perceptible, it may appear at the very beginning as the tongue adjusts to the gutter;
  • High cost Invisalign is an expensive device because of the number of aligners that have to be changed regularly and the technology involved. The price of these braces in Belgium for an adult is probably the most unpleasant negative point.

What are the alternatives to braces?

Over the past few years, a new technology has emerged that has made many people happy who didn’t want to wear braces because of the unsightly braces and wires: the transparent/invisible mouthpiece, also known as Invisalign.

While this technology is becoming increasingly popular with teenagers, it is above all adults who have seen in this removable device an opportunity to put a smile back on their faces and regain their self-confidence.

Requests for adult braces in Belgium have soared to over 30% of all consultations.

If you are asked to worn for 21 hours a daythis transparent mouthpiece allows you to smile openly in public, without having to wear unsightly braces.

How long does it take to get used to braces?

It all depends on how sensitive you are to adaptation. For some people, wearing adult braces will only inconvenience them for a few days, while others will take longer to adjust.

It’s important that the discomfort caused is only temporary and doesn’t lead to pain. If not, contact your orthodontist.

Is adult orthodontics reimbursed?

Depending on your mutuelle or insurance company, you may be eligible for partial reimbursement of your orthodontic costs. In some cases, it may not be possible to obtain a refund.

It is therefore essential to contact your mutual insurance company and/or insurer to find out about the various benefits and cover available.

For example, some mutual/insurance companies will not cover the cost of adult braces if they are intended solely for cosmetic purposes. On the other hand, if you’ve had an accident that has caused problems with your jawbone, and you need adult braces, you may be eligible for financial assistance from your mutual insurance company or insurer.

Taking out supplementary insurance can enable you to benefit from partial reimbursement and to find out all about the terms and conditions for reimbursing intervention costs, the annual ceiling, reimbursement limits, etc.

However, if you’d like to take out supplementary insurance, you’ll probably have to wait a while before taking advantage of the various benefits on offer. This is commonly referred to as the “waiting stage”.

Finally, if the price of additional insurance can frighten you, don’t hesitate to weigh up the pros and cons, especially if orthodontic treatment is really necessary and not just cosmetic. Don’t hesitate to compare the different services offered by mutual insurance companies and insurers.

Can braces be seen?

It all depends on the type of adult braces you want to wear.

If you opt for fixed braces, such as metal braces, they’ll be visible with the slightest smile, even when you’re talking. By wearing these braces on the front of your teeth (lingual braces), your adult braces will be more discreet.

With ceramic braces, the fixed braces are a little less visible than with metal braces, but the presence of the wire is still somewhat visible.

The most discreet solution is to wear an Invisalign clear aligner, which is often undetectable to those around the wearer.

How are braces fitted?

There are 2 methods for fitting fixed braces: direct and indirect.

How does it work?

Direct installation

Indirect installation

With invisible adult braces – Invisalign, the orthodontist takes impressions of the teeth, and then makes the various aligners. Once you’ve received them, all you have to do is place your first gutter, and do the same with the others as time goes by.

What's the difference between dentures and braces?

Dentures, now known as removable dental prostheses, are used to replace missing teeth in the oral cavity. Tooth loss can be caused by a number of factors, including oral problems, accidents, illness and medical treatment.

There are two types of removable dentures:

  • Partial prosthesis Partial prosthesis: used to replace a few missing teeth;
  • Total prosthesis Total prosthesis: replaces all the teeth.

In the case of partial tooth loss, it is also possible to request one or more dental implants, but these are more expensive and cannot always be implanted if there are medical contraindications or insufficient bone.

More aesthetic today than in the past, removable dentures are an effective solution for partial or total tooth loss.

Adult braces, as explained throughout this article, are a system for optimal alignment of the teeth and jaws. Whether fixed or removable, braces not only improve your quality of life, but also your self-confidence!

Why have adult orthodontics?

Most adults want braces for purely aesthetic reasons. However, there is also a category of people who could not be treated during adolescence and who turn to orthodontics to treat dental problems that have sometimes worsened over time and to enjoy a beautiful smile.

Many of our patients can’t smile, or hide, because of misaligned teeth. Advances in braces mean that adults are increasingly turning to orthodontists to remedy their dental and jaw problems.

The advantage of Invisalign braces currently on the market is that they can correct tooth alignment invisibly, thanks to transparent aligners.

If this is mostly related to a physical complex, adult braces are also the way to correct sometimes complex and disabling dental and jaw problems, such as :

  • Crossbite The lower teeth are not covered by the upper teeth;
  • Overbite The lower teeth are abnormally covered by the upper teeth;
  • Infrabite No contact between the upper and lower teeth when the mouth is closed;
  • Overlapping Lack of space for teeth, which end up overlapping;
  • Prognathism advancement of the lower jaw in relation to the upper jaw;
  • Tooth wear A jaw imbalance often puts a strain on the teeth, which eventually wear out;
  • Gastric disorders Gastric disorders: sometimes linked to poor food chewing;
  • Oral diseases These are caused by inefficient brushing, and can be improved by orthodontic treatment.

How do you get braces to fit without teeth?

It’s impossible to fit adult braces if you have no teeth!

No teeth? Apply for a total removable denture, but you don’t need braces.
