The big question

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is a small titanium artificial root placed in the jawbone to replace the root of the missing natural tooth. Implants can be used to replace one or more missing teeth, or even to restore a complete mouth. Titanium is a very strong metal that is biologically compatible with our bone structure. It is also used for knee and hip replacement.

Why implants?

Your jaws retain their solidity and strength thanks to the roots of your natural teeth, to which our dentists attach the implants.
When one or more teeth are lost, the jawbone resorbs, gradually giving way to the following problems:

  • Loss of chewing efficiency, which may interfere with the absorption of nutrients needed to maintain good health.
  • Additional stress on the remaining teeth, requiring additional work that may cause movement of neighboring teeth until they are lost.
  • Premature aging of the face, accentuation of wrinkles around the lips and loss of prosthesis stability.
  • By replacing your lost teeth with implants, these problems can be avoided or stabilized, because implants act like natural teeth.

The reliability and benefits of implants

Thanks to ongoing research into dental implants and their surgical and prosthetic procedures, studies show that the success rate of these treatments exceeds 90%. This rate is the highest of all dental restorations. We can therefore present dental implants as reliable, long-lasting treatments with solid anchorage.
Our dentists are trained to ensure the best possible quality of life for those who place their trust in us. After years of clinical experience, dental implants offer a wide range of benefits. Here are just a few examples:

  • They restore the comfort and aesthetics of natural teeth.
  • They provide a fixed, permanent replacement for missing teeth.
  • They keep your face looking beautiful by preventing jawbone resorption.
  • They stimulate bone health.
  • They clear the palate and accentuate the finesse of the flavors.
  • They increase the stability and retention of dentures.
  • They facilitate chewing and food digestion.
  • They help restore quality of life.
  • They foster greater confidence and self-esteem.
  • They don’t decay.

Any questions?
We have the answer

After careful analysis by our stomatologists, replacing a tooth with an implant may be the right choice. In the past, fixed bridges were the only solution available, requiring a significant reduction in the number of teeth. Now, dental implants enable us to replace one or more missing teeth while keeping your neighboring teeth intact.

Dental implants can support and stabilize removable dentures. The prosthesis and the muscles responsible for your facial expression will retain their tone. Laughing and eating well have never been so much fun! Restore your quality of life and boost your confidence! Allow yourself to speak, eat and laugh naturally, comfortably and confidently.

Dental implants can be placed as early as adulthood. In principle, there is no age limit. However, the patient’s general health, implant site and expectations must be assessed beforehand. That’s why your dentist at Ares Dental Brussels suggests a preliminary examination.

After examining your teeth and taking the necessary x-rays, our implantologist will present you with a treatment plan and alternative solutions. You will receive a cost estimate and all the treatment steps will be clearly explained to you. The end result is to make you forget the loss of your teeth as quickly as possible, in favor of a healthy, natural smile. In short, your quality of life will increase considerably, whether you’re chewing, talking or smiling.

Each case is unique, as many factors influence the protocol and the overall duration of the process. A number of visits are usually required to complete the full treatment, which can take from three (3) to eighteen (18) months. When aesthetics come into play, the edentulous space is filled with temporary teeth, allowing you to enjoy a full smile immediately.

Each region must be assessed individually. A minimum amount of bone volume (thickness and height of the jawbone) is required for implant placement, otherwise the implants will not be strong in the long term. If you do not have the required bone volume, it is possible to modify the area in question prior to implant placement. This procedure can be crucial to the success and longevity of your implants.

A number of factors may contraindicate dental implants for some people.

Here are a few examples:

  • Radiation therapy to the mouth in the past.
  • Uncontrolled diabetes.
  • Heavy alcohol consumption.
  • Special medications (anticoagulants and immunosuppressants) and biphosphonates.
  • Active oral disease such as periodontitis.
  • Renal dialysis.
  • Recent or previous myocardial infarction.
  • Heart failure.
  • Blood problems (e.g. hemophilia).
  • Unattainable aesthetic expectations.
  • Risky integration of implants in smokers, as healing is compromised.

In these special cases, further tests are required to determine whether implants can be placed. If necessary, your dentist will contact your attending physician.

Just like your natural teeth, new implanted teeth require regular brushing and flossing to reduce the build-up of bacterial plaque. Regular visits to your dentist are also an excellent way to ensure the health and longevity of your dental implants.
